SEO : In-house vs Agency – Which is better?

February 5, 2017

For small and medium enterprises the biggest pain point for SEO is – Cost. SEO is a long process, and it can take up to several months to start seeing small returns. Then it slowly grows to larger results in the subsequent months. If implemented correctly it can eventually return every cent that was invested.

The option is to do it yourself, employ a resource or outsource it to an agency. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

The immediate answer that will come up is to save costs and use an in-house SEO resource. However, you will soon figure out that the amount of time required to make the actual impact extends beyond your expertise. The better option is to hire an SEO agency or hire a dedicated SEO expert (or team) to work for you.

Agencies offer a package as per your requirements. Some agencies offer basic prices of $200 - $500 per month. However, you eventually get back what you pay. Typically SEO packages can range between $1000 -$10,000 per month depending on your requirements and size of your business.

When you hire an agency to do your SEO work, you can pick the services you want. Also, you have a piece of mind that your SEO is being taken care of by experts while you can concentrate on other important aspects of your business.

The cost of an additional in-house resource depends on your budget and company size. Usually, SEO experts with an experience of a few years can make $60,000 to $ 100,000 annually. If you hire more resources, the costs double up. You could also hire a part-timer, but you will get less work done with a low level of expertise.

The benefit of an agency is that they have a team of specialists. They have multiple resources for writing, developing, link building specialists and experts in SEO. This means that you can get more work done for the same amount of time. The work done is better because each resource is an expert in their field.

In most cases, the most cost-effective perspective is to work with an agency. There is nothing to lose except a little transparency. However, the results are better, more professional, more organized and more efficient even if it comes with a slightly higher price. However, returns are better. For large enterprises, they can hire a dedicated in-house SEO team rather than invest in an agency.

Consider your budget and goals and your most cost-effective option will become apparent to you.
